WATCH: HOW CAMP YOSHI IS OPENING UP THE OUTDOORS
Spending time outdoors is something all of us at ACM hold in extremely high regard. It’s important on so many levels and it pains us that there are still many people – particularly from BIPOC communities – who feel like they don’t belong there, too. So helping adidas TERREX introduce the inclusive message behind their latest campaign, United by Summits, has been a bit of a passion project over the past few months. This episode from United by Summits’ accompanying film series is one of our favourites, showcasing the work LA’s Camp Yoshi is doing to bring new communities into the wild.
WATCH: BIG BASS DREAMS | YETI DISPATCH
This short film from our friends at YETI is, coincidentally, another good example of that United by Summits spirit; a lesson in how to find your own way in the outdoors, however niche your interests might be. For Oliver Ngy, that’s fishing for really big bass using swimbaits (fishing lures that imitate live bait, if you’re wondering). Growing up in urban LA, far from any serious bass fishing spots, Ngy somehow managed to develop an unconventional approach to fishing that’s all his own, and it’s inspiring other like-minded and would-be anglers to do their own thing.
LISTEN: LEARNING TO LOVE THE OUTDOORS AS A PLUS-SIZED PERSON
Returning to the theme of feeling unwelcome in the outdoors, we recently came across this Go Love Yourself podcast about the experience of people with plus-sized bodies. Featuring Steph Wetherell from Every Body Outdoors, a group campaigning for inclusive sizing and better representation of larger bodies, it’s an energising and entertaining listen that highlights the harmful effects of poorly fitting apparel, “judgy people” and an almost total lack of visibility for larger bodies in the outdoors. There isn’t a brand around who shouldn’t listen to this.
WATCH: ARC’TERYX PRESENTS THIS IS THE MOTHERLOAD
Arc’teryx have always had a knack for capturing the human stories that make backcountry adventure so meaningful. What this new film series lacks in properly remote wilderness, it more than makes up for with a poignant tale of motherhood, friendship and finding a way to carry on doing what you love most. It follows pro skiers and friends Izzy Lynch and Tessa Treadway as they introduce their kids to their wild world, while also finding their own relief after a challenging few years. The opening episode sees them hitting the bike trails of Golden, BC, and searching for some escaped cows.
WATCH: MOVEMENT RUNNERS TEAM UP WITH ZEN RUNNING CLUB
ACM’s resident ultra-runner Stu Duggal recently fielded questions about his chosen extra-curricular activity on our Instagram and it transpired that he didn’t actually like running for a long time. It might have turned out alright for Stu, but the thought of that first run (and the next however many) can be a total turn off when you’re getting started. Particularly if you can’t tap into any running camaraderie. That’s why we love Kit John’s Movement Runners, an LA free run group that’s spent the last few years forging a community of newbie runners, while also helping local homeless people. Watch them here testing out Zen Running Club’s sustainable running shoes.
